Nearly half of Americans aren’t happy with their current weight. If you find yourself in that statistic, then it is time to make a change! Here are 3 tips for healthy weight loss here in South Florida.
- Drink Water
Did you know that being well-hydrated can curb hunger and boost metabolism by up to 3 percent? Getting enough water can be extremely beneficial when it comes to losing weight—it regulates how much you eat and helps your kidneys work properly. Swapping water for sugar drinks like soda and juice can also cut out unnecessary calories from your diet.
Although the standard used to be 8 cups a day, today it is recommended that you get
a half-ounce to an ounce for every pound you weigh. This range takes into account exercise level and climate you live in; if you are sweating more, you need to drink more water!
Not a water lover? Try flavoring it with fresh fruit or aromatic herbs. Sparkling water can also be a great substitute. Water tracking apps like Waterlogged and WaterMinder are great tools for tracking your intake.
- Keep Track of What You Eat
Speaking of tracking your intake, simply tracking the food you eat can help you regulate what you are eating and eat less. Author Peter Drucker poignantly said, “What gets measured, gets managed.” In a recent study, dieters who tracked their food at least 6 days a week lost about twice as much as those who only tracked once a week or not at all.
Tracking your food intake makes you aware of what you are eating, lets you identify where you need to make changes, and helps you see progress almost immediately. Often just the fact that you have to write down a calorie heavy snack or treat will make you reconsider.
Whether you choose to track your calories and food intake by hand in a journal, or use an app or online program, there are so many resources available. Calorific, Fooducate, and MyFitnessPal are all highly rated, free apps that make calorie counting simple.
- Diversify your workouts
Healthy weight loss usually stems from a combination of good diet and regular exercise routine. However, it’s important to add diversity to your exercise routine so that your weight loss goals don’t plateau. Both aerobic activity and strength training are important for weight loss and management.
Though the suggested guideline for healthy adults is to get at least 30 minutes of exercise, 5 days a week, in order to lose weight, 200-300 minutes of exercise a week is necessary.
Diversifying your work out helps avoid burn out, but it can also help you burn more calories as you work out different parts of the body. Switch up your routine, and don’t forget to stretch!
