What Causes Hair Loss?
Most hair loss is caused by heredity, hormones, the environment, and even some illnesses.
Everyone naturally loses hair on a daily basis – up to 100 hairs each day. While most people grow new hair to replace the old, others lose more hair than the average person and doesn’t grow back. No matter the cause, people still feel self conscious and want the ability to have a thicker head of hair and seek medical treatment to do so.
How Do People Lose Their Hair?
It is important to understand that hair grows in cycles – growing, resting and shedding. The growing cycle involves a division of living cells on a continual basis. Typically, almost all of your hair is in this phase at any given time during the entire life cycle of hair. Once the growing cycle is complete, each hair goes into the resting cycle when hair growth ceases. Only about 15 percent (at most) is continually in this phase. After the resting phase is complete, the shedding begins where hair separates from the root and falls out. This is the hair that ends up in your brush. When this happens, a new hair begins to grow from the same follicle with the whole process starting all over. Resting and shedding can take two to six months. On average, hair grows about one-half inch a month but may slow as you age.
